Peebles have commenced delivery of the 12MVA Frequency Changer package to Babcock Marine in Rosyth, the Control part of the skid, containing the starting and control equipment has now been positioned on the foundation ready for cabling.

The second and third parts of the skid, comprising the Motor and Generator will be delivered in the next few months. The attached photo shows the two machines on the test plate during factory testing. The shaft of the motor (shown on the right of the picture) is directly mechanically coupled to the generator, as are the separate baseplates.  After testing, the coupled machines will be separated and housed within their own containers before being transported to site and married up to the Control portion.

The frequency changer set takes a 50Hz 11kV supply from the National Grid and converts to 60Hz 11kV for use during the construction / testing phase of the Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier project. Peebles have extensive experience in the design and manufacture of this type of specialist equipment, and besides the motor and generator have full responsibility for the design and supply of the 11kV starting transformer and switchgear, and local control panel for the two synchronous machines, interface with existing site remote control facility, plus package lighting, small power and fire alarm systems.
